The London International Palaeography School offers intensive courses in Palaeography and Manuscript Studies. These take place throughout the year and are taught online, in person at the University of London, or in manuscript collections in Britain.
The London International Palaeography School’s summer programme will run from 8-12 June 2026, in person only. The 2026 programme has five courses:
- Introduction to Palaeography and Manuscript Studies: designed for graduate students at the beginning of research, librarians, and anyone interested in understanding the basics of working with medieval European books.
- Introduction to Making Medieval Manuscripts: a practice-based opportunity to learn by recreating medieval materials, designs and techniques.
- Introduction to Handwriting in England c. 700-1700: for students wanting to learn more about scripts and scribes in England from the early Middle Ages to the Early Modern era.
- Unlocking the Islamic Literary Heritage: An Intensive Practical Introduction to Arabic Manuscripts. Please note that students need Arabic to participate in this course.
- Textual Editing: Philosophical and Theological Texts throughout the Middle Ages. For more advanced students wanting to learn how to edit medieval texts.
The 49th Latin and Palaeography Summer School, focused on documents, will run in Birmingham in July.
The Durham University Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies offers online courses in Medieval Latin Palaeography and Early Modern English Palaeography.
London Rare Books School (LRBS) offers short courses on a wide range of themes in book history, some of which may be relevant to those interested in palaeography.
